First I discussed how <a href=\"https:\/\/somaticmovementcenter.com\/role-diet-chronic-pain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>diet can cause inflammation and chronic pain<\/b><\/a>, and then I discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/somaticmovementcenter.com\/chronic-inflammation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>what chronic inflammation is<\/b><\/a> and how it can cause many health conditions including cancer, atherosclerosis, and type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">This week, we&#8217;ll learn about the 12 most common causes of chronic inflammation. Diet<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">More and more research shows how the standard American diet, heavy in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9Pnan0ETlVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>animal products<\/b><\/a>, processed food, and added sugar and salt triggers the inflammation response in our body. Even if you live an otherwise healthy lifestyle and maintain a healthy weight, eating these foods puts you at risk for many inflammatory conditions including cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, depression, and <a href=\"https:\/\/somaticmovementcenter.com\/role-diet-chronic-pain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>painful autoimmune diseases.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/vegan-statistics-global\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>worldwide trend toward a plant-based diet<\/b><\/a> is encouraging\u2014everyone from doctors to top athletes are recognizing the health benefits of eliminating animal products and processed food. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forksoverknives.com\/success-stories\/#gs.0ncq5x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>dramatic effects of eating a whole food, plant based diet<\/b><\/a>\u2014like complete recoveries from kidney disease, heart disease, thyroid disease, painful autoimmune diseases, diabetes, asthma, migraines, and even cancer\u2014are hard to ignore.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-4 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-3 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><h2><b>2. Smoking and tobacco use<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">Toxic chemicals in cigarette smoke (including arsenic, ammonia, radon, and carbon monoxide) and smokeless tobacco (including formaldehyde, cyanide, arsenic, and lead) damage the cells in our body, triggering the immune response of inflammation. Cells are also damaged when chemicals from cigarette smoke combine with oxygen in the body, creating oxidative stress. In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2016\/10\/161031110809.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>nicotine by itself triggers an immune response<\/b><\/a> in our cells.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/cancer-causes\/tobacco-and-cancer\/health-risks-of-smoking-tobacco.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>health effects<\/b><\/a> of smoking and tobacco use are frightening. Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/cancer-causes\/tobacco-and-cancer\/health-risks-of-smoking-tobacco.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>smoking kills more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, HIV, guns, and illegal drugs combined<\/b><\/a>, your best bet is to avoid it completely.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-5 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-4 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5\"><h2><b>3. Alcohol consumption<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">There are at least three ways in which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2842521\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>alcohol causes chronic inflammation<\/b><\/a>. First, alcohol damages the cells in our body, triggering the immune response of inflammation. Second, metabolism of alcohol leads to the production of reactive oxygen species, which then stimulate inflammation. Third, hypoxia (lack of oxygen in tissues) resulting from alcohol metabolism can cause inflammation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">Keep in mind that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services <a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/dietaryguidelines\/2015\/guidelines\/appendix-9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>defines moderate drinking<\/b><\/a> as being up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men. This falls to just one drink per day for both men and women over age 65.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(18)31310-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>A 2018 study<\/b><\/a> of alcohol consumption in 195 countries showed that having just one alcoholic drink per day increases your chances of dying or suffering from cancer, stroke, heart disease, car accident, liver disease, and tuberculosis. While alcohol has been shown to have a mild protective effect against heart disease and diabetes, this effect is offset by the increased risk of cancer. The researchers who conducted the study concluded that the \u201clevel of consumption that minimizes health loss due to alcohol use is zero.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-6 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-5 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-6\"><h2><b>4. Lack of exercise<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">Large population-based studies consistently show that regular aerobic exercise decreases chronic inflammation. There are at least three reasons why:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">1. <b>By reducing body fat.<\/b> As you&#8217;ll learn in #7, excess fat tissue creates the inflammatory response.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">2. <b>By contracting muscles and increasing muscle mass.<\/b> During exercise, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3629815\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>working muscles produce molecules<\/b><\/a> that have anti-inflammatory effects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">3. <b>By <a href=\"https:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/45\/12\/987.abstract?sid=e6594508-3aaa-4c61-99ba-4ea138580947\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strengthening the immune system<\/b><\/a>, making our acute immune response more efficient and effective. This reduces the chances that we&#8217;ll experience repeat or prolonged infections and the accompanying chronic inflammation.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-7 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-6 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-7\"><h2><b>5. Sleep habits<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">Sleep is a critical part of our overall health, and one that many of us ignore. It might surprise you that <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1111\/j.1753-4887.2007.tb00371.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>too little sleep<\/b><\/a>, too <em>much<\/em> sleep, and chronically disturbed sleep all increase levels of inflammatory markers in the body, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2008\/09\/080902075211.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>as little as one night<\/b><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">One reason for this is our circadian rhythms: These physiological changes that follow a daily cycle help to regulate our sleeping and waking, hormones, appetite, digestion, body temperature, and\u2014you guessed it\u2014our immune system. Irregular circadian rhythms have been linked to chronic inflammatory conditions including obesity, diabetes, and depression.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">A second way that sleep increases inflammation is by increasing stress, which triggers our immune response. A third way that sleep increases inflammation is by affecting gut health. Lack of quality sleep can <a href=\"https:\/\/thesleepdoctor.com\/2018\/05\/29\/the-latest-on-sleep-and-gut-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>change the makeup of our microbiota<\/b><\/a>, increasing disease-causing bacteria and decreasing beneficial bacteria.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-8 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-7 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-8\"><h2><b>6. Stress<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">Stress is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5476783\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>risk factor in 75% to 90% of disease<\/b><\/a>, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease, depression, Alzheimer\u2019s disease, Parkinson\u2019s disease, and cancer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">The reason for this is that stress activates our immune response, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5476783\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>triggering inflammation in both our body and brain<\/b><\/a>. While acute stress can have a temporary positive effect on immune system function, chronic stress\u2014the kind that the majority of us experience\u2014has negative effects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">Stress, and the personality and habits that drive it\u2014like being type-A and working long hours\u2014are often admired in our society. If we&#8217;re not stressed out, we must not be working hard enough! But chronic stress is just as detrimental to our health as obesity and smoking, and reducing stress in your life is one of the best things you can do for your health. (I&#8217;m passionate about this topic, and I&#8217;ll do a series of posts about stress later this fall\u2014stay tuned!)<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-9 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-8 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-9\"><h2><b>7. Obesity<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">Our immune system evolved to protect us from things that might harm us. So maybe it shouldn&#8217;t come as a surprise that having excess body fat triggers the immune system response of inflammation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">In lean adipose (fat) tissue, immune system cells repair tissue and protect against pathogens. This is an anti-inflammatory, insulin sensitive environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 19px; line-height: 29px;\">As you can see in the image below, individual adipocytes (fat cells) grow in size as one becomes more overweight.
